Reflection
First of all, I would like to reflect on how this project went on me.
Firstly, my challenges are diverse and various since it is my first time to do the inquiry-based learning project as a designer and obviously, I did not have relevant experiences before so every step that I took is brand new try for me and design thinking protocols as a way to dive deeply into the impact of what it means to be a teacher as designer, and the tools and mindsets that embody this role (Bartlett, 2021). For example, I need to illustrate the cultural filed investigation in this project, which requires me to have a great knowledge of living and lifelong learning for its diversity in cultures because learning a language is to learn a different culture background. Secondly, for the successes that I experienced, I received bunches of positive comments from my peers when I did the demonstration class in front of them. They were really getting into it and my projects procedure engaged them to the class. They told me they were happy to learn and enjoy this process. I suppose this could be named as one kind of success since inquiry project could use various strategies to increase understanding and engagements(Spencer. 2017). Furthermore, I think through this inquiry-based learning, I could help student participate in ways of life such as eating comfortably in restaurant. Thirdly, the questions about this process that I still have are how could I build up the diverse and peaceful worldview for students during the class and how could I switch students’ logic thinking for speaking English and learn a new thinking way to speak Chinese since exposing them to the language context and environment for a short term is conspicuously not going on for long since loosening the bounds of traditional approaches to teaching comes with great risk (Quinn et al., 2018). Fourthly, I might do the assessment activities sections differently if I am to plan this project again since I think I expressed these parts in an unclearly and vague way. I would like to add formative assessment to communicate growth mindset messages to students (Boaler, 2015). For the students, self-assessment and peer-assessment are also very important and helpful for students to think about what they have learned and what they still need to work on.
Then, I would like to reflect on the inquiry process.
Firstly, for the knowledges that I learned about inquiry in going through this process, inquiry-based Education is an approach to learning that takes advantage of inquiry to create authentic, meaningful and engaging personalized learning for students (Stacey, 2018) so I understand that if people want to learn from inquiry, they have to be confident about their potentials and feel powerful to explore the unknown world. Moreover, I realize that inquiry is to explore the unknown world with various perspective (Khalaf & Zin, 2018) so my project could motivate students learning languages effectively through this project. Secondly, for the insights about my initial questions coming into this course, they have been solved generally. My initial questions are “what is inquiry” and “how can I incorporate inquiry-based pedagogy with my project”. I found out that teachers in this project are activators of learning and ask probing questions meant to clarify the basic assumptions underpinning a truth claim and students would experience the language environment by themselves through eating Hot Pot. Thirdly, for the contents that I am still wondering about inquiry after doing this project and taking this class, I assume that how could I impart the learning thoughts to students that very original speaking Mandarin are founded by communicating with native speakers instant of only sitting in the classroom to follow the radio or watch Chinese channels for practicing and how to encourage students to ask questions and support them through the investigation process, understanding when to begin.
At last, I would like to reflect on feedback from instructor and peers.
Jodi suggested that my questions could expand out into deeper questions. So I added “How does the landscape we live in influence the types of foods we can grow and use in our cooking? how do certain foods become traditional for a country/region?”, which are related to Indian pepper/Mexican pepper/Chinese pepper to incorporate inquiry-based pedagogy and the inquiry cycle into this topic. My peers feedbacks focus on the engagements have been increased in my project.
